One of the most common questions I’m asked before a reading or show is:

“Can you bring through a specific person for me?”

It’s an entirely natural question. When someone books a medium, their heart is often focused on one person — a partner, parent, sibling, child, or friend. Yet mediumship doesn’t always unfold the way we expect, because communication from Spirit isn’t summoned or demanded; it’s received and allowed.

In this post, I want to explain — from both a Spiritualist and personal perspective — who can come through in a reading, why certain spirits step forward first, and how you can recognise the intelligence behind it.

The Door Is Open to All, But Spirit Chooses Who Steps Through

In my experience, any soul in the Spirit world is capable of communicating. The limitation isn’t on their side — it’s on ours.
Mediumship relies on energy alignment, a blending of vibration between the medium, the sitter, and Spirit. The one whose energy best aligns with that of the medium usually comes through first.

That’s why you might be hoping for your grandmother, but your father’s energy arrives first — not because she doesn’t want to speak, but because in that moment, his frequency links more easily.

Spirit chooses the order, timing, and message. It’s less like dialling a phone number and more like answering a call from whoever’s signal is strongest.

Close Family Are Most Common — But Not Exclusive

Naturally, the spirits who most often come through are those bound to you by deep emotional ties. Love is the magnetic force of the afterlife.
Parents, partners, children, and close friends tend to appear first because the emotional current between you is still vibrant.

However, you may also receive contact from more distant relatives — a great-grandparent you never met, a godparent, or even a neighbour who helped raise you.

Spirit communication isn’t always about the person you miss most; it’s about the soul who can bring the healing you need now.
Sometimes the most unexpected communicator turns out to carry the exact message your heart required.

They Come When the Conditions Are Right

Spirit communication depends on three forms of energy coming into harmony:

Spirit energy – the soul in the next world.

Medium energy – the translator of frequency.

Sitter energy – the receiver, whose openness influences clarity.

If any one of those energies is tired, distracted, or emotionally blocked, the connection may be limited.
That’s why some readings feel effortless and others require patience.

It’s also why the loved one you most wish to hear from sometimes waits until a later sitting — not because of rejection, but because timing, emotion, or your personal healing needs weren’t yet aligned.

Personality Still Shines Through

One of the most reassuring aspects of mediumship is that personality survives death.

A mother who was organised in life still comes through neatly and to the point.
A granddad who told jokes will often communicate through humour.
A quiet person may offer short, gentle impressions rather than long conversations.

Spirits retain their individuality, and their manner of communicating mirrors how they lived.
That’s why some come through with floods of detail while others simply send a feeling of love — neither is “better,” it’s just who they are.

Not Every Loved One Is Ready Right Away

Occasionally a spirit doesn’t appear immediately after passing.
This doesn’t mean they’ve “gone” or are “unable” — it means they’re adjusting to their new state, or the emotional intensity of those left behind makes clear contact difficult.

Just as grief needs time for the living, transition requires gentleness for the departed.
After that settling period, communication tends to flow more easily, and the energy feels calmer, clearer, and more loving.

Guides, Teachers, and Friends

In addition to family, you may sense or hear from spirit guides or helpers — souls not necessarily known to you on earth who assist in communication.
While I work as an unguided medium (meaning I connect directly with the communicating soul rather than through an intermediary guide), many mediums experience these presences as supportive influences that organise or protect the communication space.

You may also encounter souls who were acquaintances, mentors, or even colleagues — anyone with emotional resonance or unfinished words.

Spirit World Logic vs. Human Logic

We often expect our loved ones to queue up politely in the order we’d prefer, but Spirit follows emotional intelligence rather than hierarchy.

You might think, “Why did my grandfather come instead of my mother?”
Spirit might answer, “Because he can say what she can’t.”

Their world works on love and healing, not protocol.
Each communicator steps forward for a reason, even if that reason only becomes clear later.

The Living Also Influence Who Appears

Your emotional state creates the atmosphere Spirit works through.
If you’re nervous, angry, or desperate, your energy tightens. Spirit senses that and may choose a gentle communicator first to calm the environment before others step forward.

Likewise, if you come with open curiosity, you create a higher frequency that allows multiple souls to connect fluidly.
Your intention matters — you don’t “summon,” but you invite through love, patience, and trust.

Age, Passing, and Circumstance Don’t Limit Communication

People sometimes ask, “Can a child come through? What about someone who passed tragically?”
The answer is yes — but the tone of the message reflects healing and peace rather than the trauma of the event.

Spirit never re-creates distress. A young soul will usually communicate through symbols, sensations of innocence, or a sense of parental love.
A person who died suddenly may simply convey calm reassurance: “I’m at peace now.”

Mediumship focuses on survival of consciousness, not re-living pain. The afterlife does not freeze people in tragedy; it frees them from it.

Pets and Non-Human Souls

Though my work focuses on human communication, it’s common for people to sense the continued presence of beloved animals.
Spirit animals often appear through symbols — a sudden memory, a familiar sound, or a sensation near your feet.
Their loyalty is energetic; love, after all, is universal.

When No One Seems to Come

Sometimes a sitting feels quiet. That doesn’t mean Spirit has withdrawn — it often means the message is subtle, or that what you need today is insight rather than communication.

I remind clients: Spirit always hears you, even if they don’t always answer through a medium.
You can still connect personally through thought, memory, and gratitude.

Silence from Spirit is often a sign of peace, not absence.

How to Prepare Yourself

To encourage clear communication:

Come with openness, not expectation.

Avoid demanding a specific person.

Think of your loved ones with love, not grief.

Keep an open mind to whoever steps forward.

Allow time — Spirit knows what you need even when you don’t.

Mediumship works best when it’s a conversation of hearts, not a test of evidence.

The Larger Truth

Ultimately, who comes through in a mediumship reading depends on the divine intelligence of love itself.
Spirits don’t visit randomly; they respond to need. They appear to comfort, to heal, to reassure, or sometimes simply to remind you that you are not alone.

Each communication — even the briefest impression — is a thread in the tapestry of proof that consciousness continues.
