Ghosts and Mediums: Understanding the Difference Between Spirit, Hauntings, and True Mediumship
Ghosts and mediums: understanding the difference between spirit, hauntings, and true mediumship by Psychic Medium Kristian von Sponneck
The words ghosts and mediums are often thrown together as if they belong to the same world. In reality, they sit on two very different sides of the spiritual spectrum. As a psychic medium, I often meet people who assume that my work involves chasing ghosts through dark corridors, speaking to lost souls trapped between dimensions, or clearing out haunted houses like something from a TV show.
But genuine mediumship is far more grounded, far more human, and far more healing than the sensationalised version we see online.
In this post, I want to break down the relationship between ghosts and mediums — what they are, why people confuse them, and what truly happens during spirit communication.

What Exactly Is a Ghost?
The term ghost is loaded with emotion and Hollywood imagery. For most people, a ghost is:
A spirit stuck between worlds
A restless presence
A trapped soul unable to move on
Something that haunts a location
While there are countless stories and personal experiences of hauntings, the truth is far more nuanced.
Many ‘ghost experiences’ are actually:
Residual energy left behind
Emotional imprints in a location
Heightened intuition from the experiencer
Spirit trying to get someone’s attention in the only way they can
Or, sometimes, simple misinterpretation of noise, light, or atmosphere
A ghost is not always an intelligent spirit trying to communicate. Sometimes it’s more like a spiritual echo — an energetic footprint, not a conversation.
What Is a Medium?
A medium is not a ghost-hunter.
A medium is not an exorcist.
A medium does not “see dead people everywhere” like in a film.
A medium is someone who can blend their energy with the energy of spirit to receive:
Images
Sounds
Feelings
Memories
Personality traits
And most importantly, messages
Real mediumship is about connection, not fear. It’s about empathy, healing, validation, and giving people the chance to hear from those they love.
Mediums work with spirit intelligence, not with trapped echoes or residual energy.
Why People Confuse Ghosts and Spirits
Mediums communicate with spirit, not with “ghosts” in the Hollywood sense.
Spirit is conscious, aware, intelligent, and capable of meaningful communication.
Ghosts — at least in the way society defines them — are often:
Fragments
Memories
Energetic imprints
Emotional leftover signatures
But because both involve the unseen, people naturally group them together.
The confusion usually comes from:
TV ghost-hunting shows
TikTok ‘paranormal’ creators
Haunted house attractions
Dramatic storytelling
These entertainment sources blur the lines between intuitive connection and spooky theatrics.
Do Mediums See Ghosts?
Mediums don’t see “ghosts wandering around.”
Mediums experience spirit presence when there is an intention and a purpose.
A medium’s connection relies on:
Attunement
Psychic sensitivity
Emotional intelligence
Trust in the process
The presence of a communicator in spirit
We don’t walk around being bombarded by random spirits. That’s a myth created to make mediumship look chaotic or scary.
Genuine mediumship is controlled, focused, and respectful.
Are Hauntings Real?
Yes — but not always in the way people think.
Some hauntings are simply energetic residue.
Some are environmental triggers that heighten the senses.
Some are spirit trying to reach the living but failing to find a clear pathway.
And occasionally, yes, an intelligent presence may be attempting to communicate.
Mediums sometimes get called into these situations, but not to fight or banish anything — more to understand what the energy is and why it’s there.
When Ghosts Are Actually Spirit Trying to Communicate
Many people assume that:
A cold spot means a haunting
A flickering light means a ghost
A shadow means something negative
A noise means someone is trapped
But often these experiences are simply spirit making themselves known in the only way available at that moment.
Spirit communication is subtle.
It’s rarely dramatic.
It’s never theatrical.
Mediums work in the space between subtle intuition and clear connection — the place where meaning and message meet.
Mediumship Brings Clarity Where Ghost Stories Bring Fear
Ghost stories entertain.
Mediumship heals.
Ghosts are external, mysterious, and often frightening.
Mediumship is internal, emotional, and deeply human.
A ghost story might thrill you for a moment.
A mediumship reading can change your life.
Why Spirits Communicate With Mediums (And Not With Everyone Else)
Everyone has intuitive ability, but not everyone is attuned to the spirit world. Spirit will choose a medium when:
The energy is right
The message is important
The medium is open and receptive
There is a need for validation, healing, or closure
Mediumship is not about “pulling spirits in.”
It’s about being sensitive enough to hear when they call.
In the End: Ghosts Are the Mystery — Mediums Bring the Meaning
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the real heart of mediumship lies not in fear, but in connection.
Ghosts are the unexplained.
Mediums give the explanation.
Ghosts are the echo.
Mediums hear the voice.
Ghosts raise questions.
Mediums bring answers.
Mediumship isn’t about the haunted house at the end of the street — it’s about the love, memory, and humanity that continue long after physical life ends.
