Spirit Guides: Everything You Need To Know

Introduction

Spirit guides are one of the most talked about and, at times, misunderstood aspects of Mediumship. Whether you are new to the subject or have been exploring spirituality for years, you will likely have come across the idea that we all have guides supporting us in some way. Within the world of the Psychic Medium, spirit guides are often described as helpers, teachers, or companions who assist with communication between the physical and spiritual worlds.

In this post, I want to explore the concept of spirit guides in depth. I will look at what they are believed to be, how different Psychic Mediums experience them, and some of the questions that naturally arise around their existence. As with much of Mediumship, there are no fixed rules, and experiences can vary widely from one individual to another.

Before going any further, it is important to be clear about my own position on this subject.

My Personal Perspective And Openness

As a Psychic Medium, I do not consciously work with a spirit guide, nor do I believe that I have one in the traditional sense that is often described. My connection with Spirit feels direct, coming through my own awareness via clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, and claircognizance. There is no distinct presence that I identify as a guide assisting or directing the communication.

Because of this, everything in this blog post is based on research, observation, and conversations within the wider Mediumship community rather than personal experience of working with a guide.

I want to be very open about that.

This post is not written to dismiss the idea of spirit guides, nor to suggest that they do not exist. It is simply my perspective based on how I experience Mediumship and what I have observed through others. As I discussed in my previous post, Spirit Guides Or Just Voices In Their Heads?, Mediumship appears to be experienced differently by each Psychic Medium, and there may not be one single explanation that fits all.

I am also very open to feedback on this subject. If you have your own experiences or perspectives on spirit guides, I welcome comments and discussion. Mediumship evolves through shared understanding, and I believe it is important to keep the conversation open.

What Are Spirit Guides?

Spirit guides are generally described as non-physical beings who assist individuals in their personal development, life path, or spiritual awareness. Within Mediumship, they are often seen as helpers who support the Psychic Medium in connecting with Spirit communicators.

Some describe guides as souls who have lived before and chosen to assist others from the Spirit world. Others see them more as forms of higher consciousness or spiritual intelligence rather than individual personalities.

The descriptions vary significantly, but common themes often include guidance, protection, teaching, and support.

For many Psychic Mediums, spirit guides are considered an integral part of their work. They may describe a guide as helping to organise communication, ensure the right Spirit comes forward, or assist in interpreting information.

Different Types Of Spirit Guides

Within spiritual discussions, there are often references to different types of spirit guides. Some are described as main guides who stay with a person throughout their life, while others may come and go depending on circumstances or development.

Some Psychic Mediums describe having multiple guides, each with a specific role. For example, one guide may be associated with healing, another with communication, and another with protection.

There are also claims of ancestral guides, who are believed to be family members or relatives who continue to support from the Spirit world.

While these ideas are widely discussed, it is important to remember that they are interpretations rather than universally proven structures. Mediumship does not appear to follow a single blueprint.

How Psychic Mediums Experience Spirit Guides

For those Psychic Mediums who work with guides, the experience can vary greatly.

Some report seeing their guide clearly through clairvoyant imagery. They may describe appearance, clothing, or even historical background. Others hear their guide through clairaudience as a distinct voice separate from their own thoughts.

In other cases, the presence of a guide is felt more subtly. It may come through as a strong sense of knowing, a shift in awareness, or a feeling of support rather than a clear visual or auditory experience.

This variation again highlights how individual Mediumship can be. What one Psychic Medium experiences very clearly, another may not experience at all.

The Question Of Internal Dialogue

One of the key discussions around spirit guides is whether the communication is external or internal.

As I explored in my previous post, Spirit Guides Or Just Voices In Their Heads?, the impressions received during Mediumship often appear within the same mental space as our own thoughts. This naturally raises questions about whether what is perceived as a guide could, in some cases, be the Medium’s own internal dialogue.

The human mind is capable of creating vivid internal experiences. Thoughts, ideas, and impressions can feel incredibly real. At the same time, Psychic Mediums often report that communication from Spirit feels distinctly different from normal thinking.

This creates an interesting overlap where it can be difficult to draw a clear line between internal and external sources of information.

Could Internal Dialogue Be Spirit Communication?

While some people question whether spirit guides are simply internal voices, it is also worth considering the reverse.

If Spirit communication is received through the mind, then it may naturally present itself in a way that resembles internal dialogue. What we interpret as our own thoughts could, at times, include impressions or influences from Spirit.

This possibility suggests that the distinction between internal and external may not be as clear as we assume.

From this perspective, what one Psychic Medium identifies as a spirit guide could be another Medium’s way of interpreting subtle impressions within their own awareness.

Why I Do Not Use A Spirit Guide

In my own work as a Psychic Medium, I do not identify a separate guiding presence. The information I receive feels direct, and I interpret it as coming straight through my own senses.

This does not mean that guidance is not present. It simply means that I do not experience it in a way that I label as a spirit guide.

It is entirely possible that assistance exists in ways that I do not consciously recognise. Equally, it may be that my mind processes information in a way that does not create a distinct sense of an external guide.

As with much of Mediumship, it comes down to interpretation and personal experience.

The Lack Of Rules In Mediumship

One of the most important things to understand about Mediumship is that there are no universally agreed rules.

Some Psychic Mediums work closely with guides and feel they are essential to their practice. Others work entirely without them. Some use tools such as Tarot or psychometry, while others rely purely on direct communication.

This diversity suggests that Mediumship is not a fixed system. It is a flexible process that adapts to the individual.

Because of this, trying to define a single correct way to experience spirit guides may not be possible.

The Role Of Belief

Belief can also play a role in how spirit guides are experienced.

If a Psychic Medium begins their development with the expectation that they will meet a guide, they may interpret certain impressions in that way. Conversely, someone who does not hold that expectation may interpret the same type of impression as intuition or direct Spirit communication.

This does not necessarily mean one interpretation is right and the other is wrong. It may simply reflect how the mind makes sense of subtle experiences.

Mediumship sits in a space where perception and belief can influence how communication is understood.

The Importance Of Personal Experience

Ultimately, Mediumship is a personal experience.

Whether a Psychic Medium works with spirit guides or not, what matters most is the authenticity of the communication and the impact it has on the person receiving the message.

For some Psychic Mediums, guides provide structure and support. For others, communication feels more direct and does not involve identifiable guides.

Both approaches can result in meaningful and evidential communication.

The key is that the process works for the individual Medium and provides value to those they are reading for.

Respecting Different Perspectives

Because experiences vary so widely, it is important to respect different perspectives within Mediumship.

Dismissing the idea of spirit guides entirely would ignore the genuine experiences of many Psychic Mediums. Equally, insisting that every Psychic Medium must have a guide would not reflect the diversity of how Mediumship is experienced.

There is room within Mediumship for multiple interpretations.

It is possible that spirit guides exist, that they are interpreted in different ways, or that the process of communication is more complex than we currently understand.

Conclusion

Spirit guides remain one of the most fascinating and debated aspects of Mediumship.

From my perspective as a Psychic Medium, I do not consciously work with a guide, and my understanding of the subject comes from research, observation, and discussion rather than direct experience. As I mentioned in my previous post, Spirit Guides Or Just Voices In Their Heads?, the line between internal dialogue and spiritual communication is not always clear.

What is clear is that Mediumship does not appear to follow strict rules. Some Psychic Mediums experience guides vividly, while others do not experience them at all.

Rather than forcing a single explanation, it may be more honest to accept that Mediumship is flexible and can be experienced in different ways.

If you have your own thoughts or experiences regarding spirit guides, I would genuinely welcome your feedback. Sharing perspectives is one of the ways we continue to deepen our understanding of Mediumship.

In the end, whether spirit guides are external beings, internal interpretations, or something in between, they remain a subject that invites curiosity, exploration, and open discussion.
