Spirit Guides Or Just Voices In Their Heads?
Spirit guides or just voices in their heads? By Psychic Medium Kristian von Sponneck

Introduction
One of the subjects that often comes up when discussing Mediumship is the idea of spirit guides. Many Psychic Mediums speak about working with one or more guides who assist them in their communication with Spirit. These guides are often described as teachers, helpers, or spiritual companions who help organise information from the Spirit world and pass it on to the Medium.
For some people exploring Mediumship, the concept of a spirit guide seems almost essential. It is sometimes presented as if every Psychic Medium must have a guide directing or assisting their work. Yet the experiences of Psychic Mediums can vary widely, and not everyone describes their connection with Spirit in the same way.
In my own work as a Psychic Medium, I do not consciously work with a spirit guide. That does not mean I dismiss the idea that spirit guides exist, nor do I suggest that other Psychic Mediums who feel they work with guides are mistaken. Instead, it highlights an important reality about Mediumship. There appear to be very few fixed rules about how it is experienced.
The question therefore becomes an interesting one. When a Psychic Medium hears what they believe to be a guide speaking to them, is that communication coming from an external spiritual intelligence, or could it be the Medium’s own internal dialogue or consciousness interpreting information in a particular way?
The honest answer may be that the line between these possibilities is not always clear.
The Traditional Idea Of Spirit Guides
The concept of spirit guides has been present within spiritual traditions for a very long time. In many belief systems, guides are described as spiritual beings who assist individuals on their life path. Within Mediumship, they are often described as helpers who assist the Psychic Medium in communicating with Spirit.
Some Psychic Mediums say that their guide helps organise communication, ensuring that the right Spirit communicator comes forward at the right time. Others describe guides as teachers who help them understand the information they receive through their psychic senses.
Guides are sometimes described as having distinct personalities, names, or even appearances. In some cases, Psychic Mediums say they can see or hear their guide clearly. In other cases the connection is more subtle, appearing as thoughts, impressions, or internal messages.
For those who experience this clearly, the presence of a guide can feel very real and supportive.
My Own Experience As A Psychic Medium
In my own experience as a Psychic Medium, I do not consciously work with a spirit guide. I receive impressions directly through my own senses such as clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, and claircognizance. These impressions appear within my awareness as images, feelings, thoughts, or subtle internal impressions that I then interpret.
Because of this, my experience of Mediumship feels very direct. There is no obvious intermediary voice guiding the communication. Instead, the information appears within my awareness and I relay it as clearly as possible to the person receiving the message.
However, just because I do not consciously experience a guide does not mean that none exists. It is entirely possible that assistance could be present in ways that I simply do not recognise or interpret in that way.
Mediumship is not a process that comes with a rule book, and each Psychic Medium may experience it differently.
The Role Of Internal Dialogue
One of the interesting aspects of Mediumship is the role played by the mind itself. Human beings naturally experience internal dialogue. Many people are familiar with the quiet voice inside their head that reflects on situations, considers ideas, or interprets experiences.
When a Psychic Medium receives impressions from Spirit, those impressions often appear within the same mental space where internal dialogue normally occurs.
This creates an intriguing question. When a thought appears during a reading, how does the Medium determine whether that thought originates from Spirit, from their own intuition, or from their normal internal thought process?
The answer often lies in experience and sensitivity. Over time, Psychic Mediums become familiar with the subtle differences between their ordinary thoughts and impressions that appear to come from outside their usual awareness.
Yet even with experience, the boundary can still be subtle.
Could The Voice Of A Guide Be The Medium’s Own Mind?
For some observers, the idea of spirit guides raises understandable questions. When a Psychic Medium describes hearing a guide speaking to them internally, sceptics sometimes suggest that this may simply be the Medium’s own inner voice.
It is not unreasonable to consider this possibility. The human mind is capable of extraordinary creativity, imagination, and interpretation. Internal dialogue can feel vivid and convincing.
At the same time, those who experience communication with guides often insist that the impressions feel distinctly different from their normal thoughts. They may describe the information arriving suddenly, unexpectedly, or containing details that they feel they could not have consciously created.
This difference in perception is one reason why the debate continues.
From my perspective as a Psychic Medium, it is possible that both explanations may hold some truth.
Could My Internal Dialogue Actually Be A Guide?
While some people question whether spirit guides are simply internal dialogue, the opposite possibility is equally interesting. What if what we normally consider to be our own internal voice is not entirely separate from spiritual influence?
If Spirit communication often appears within the mind as thoughts or impressions, it raises the possibility that what we interpret as our own thoughts may sometimes contain subtle influences from outside our normal awareness.
In other words, what we call internal dialogue may not always be purely internal.
If a spirit guide were communicating through subtle impressions within a Psychic Medium’s awareness, it might easily appear indistinguishable from the Medium’s own thoughts.
This possibility makes the subject far more complex than simply deciding whether guides exist or not.
The Lack Of Fixed Rules In Mediumship
One of the most important things I have learned through my work as a Psychic Medium is that Mediumship does not appear to follow a single universal structure.
Some Psychic Mediums work closely with guides and describe very clear relationships with them. Others, like myself, do not consciously experience guides at all.
Some people see Spirit clearly through clairvoyant images, while others feel emotional impressions through clairsentience or simply know information through claircognizance.
There are also Psychic Mediums who use tools such as Tarot cards, psychometry, or other methods to help focus their awareness.
Because experiences vary so widely, it becomes difficult to establish strict rules about what Mediumship should or should not look like.
Spirit communication may simply be experienced differently by each individual.
The Importance Of Interpretation
Regardless of whether a Psychic Medium works with guides or not, interpretation remains a central part of the process.
Information received from Spirit rarely arrives as clear spoken sentences. Instead it often appears as impressions, images, emotions, or symbolic thoughts.
The Psychic Medium must interpret these impressions and translate them into language that the recipient can understand.
This interpretation takes place within the Medium’s own mind. That means the Medium’s personal awareness, beliefs, and experiences inevitably play a role in how the message is understood.
For this reason, two Psychic Mediums receiving the same impression might interpret it slightly differently.
The involvement of the mind does not necessarily invalidate the experience. It simply highlights that Mediumship is a partnership between Spirit communication and human perception.
Why Experiences Differ Among Psychic Mediums
Another reason spirit guides remain such an open topic is because Psychic Mediums often begin their journeys in different ways.
Some individuals report becoming aware of guides early in their development. Others spend years working with Spirit without ever identifying a specific guide.
It is possible that guides choose to reveal themselves only when necessary. It is also possible that some Psychic Mediums simply interpret the assistance they receive in different ways.
One Medium may perceive that assistance as a guide, while another may simply experience it as intuitive understanding.
Neither perspective necessarily cancels out the other.
Mediumship may simply be flexible enough to accommodate both.
Respecting Different Experiences
Because Mediumship experiences vary so widely, I believe it is important not to dismiss the experiences of other Psychic Mediums.
If someone genuinely feels that they work with a spirit guide who assists their communication, that experience should be respected. Equally, if another Psychic Medium feels they work directly with Spirit without the involvement of guides, that experience is just as valid.
The diversity of experiences within Mediumship may actually reflect the diversity of human consciousness itself.
There may not be a single correct way for Spirit communication to occur.
Instead, each Psychic Medium may develop their own relationship with the process based on their sensitivity, awareness, and interpretation.
Conclusion
So are spirit guides real, or are they simply voices within a Psychic Medium’s own mind?
From my perspective as a Psychic Medium, the honest answer is that we may not fully know. Some Psychic Mediums clearly experience the presence of guides and feel their influence strongly during communication with Spirit. Others, including myself, do not consciously work with a guide and instead experience the connection as direct communication through our own senses.
At the same time, the possibility remains that the internal voice we interpret as our own thoughts could sometimes be influenced by Spirit in subtle ways. What we call internal dialogue might occasionally overlap with spiritual communication in ways we do not yet fully understand.
Mediumship does not appear to follow rigid rules, and experiences can vary greatly from one Psychic Medium to another. Rather than insisting on a single explanation, it may be more honest to acknowledge that Spirit communication can manifest in different ways depending on the individual.
For some Psychic Mediums, spirit guides are a clear and central part of their work. For others, communication feels direct and personal without the presence of an identifiable guide.
Both experiences may simply represent different ways of interacting with the same mysterious process of connecting with Spirit.
