How Can You Communicate With Spirit More Effectively? A Medium’s Guide to Strengthening Your Connection
How can you communicate with Spirit more effectively? A Medium’s guide to strengthening your connection by Psychic Medium Kristian von Sponneck

Introduction: Spirit Communication Is Simpler Than People Think
One of the most common questions I’m asked, both in private readings and at my live shows across the UK, is “How can I communicate with Spirit more effectively?” People worry they’re doing it wrong, or that Spirit can’t hear them, or that they need rituals, crystals, candles or complex techniques to be noticed.
In reality, Spirit communication is far more natural, emotional and instinctive than people realise. It isn’t about theatrics. It isn’t about speaking in a certain way. And it certainly isn’t about learning some secret language that only mediums know.
As someone who works professionally as a psychic medium and psychic entertainer — and previously spent many years as a psychotherapist and trauma counsellor — I’ve seen how the emotional world plays a much bigger role in Spirit connection than anything you can physically do. Spirit doesn’t respond to routine. Spirit responds to emotion, openness and genuine intention.
Communicating with Spirit isn’t about trying harder. It’s about learning to soften, feel and allow.
Understanding That Spirit Responds to Emotion, Not Perfection
Spirit doesn’t require you to be spiritual every moment of the day. They don’t expect meditation, constant positivity or perfect calmness before they step in. Spirit blends with your emotional reality — not your ideal version of yourself.
If you’re grieving, they feel it. If you’re talking to them through tears, they hear it. If you’re smiling at a memory, they connect with that warmth instantly.
This is why people often feel Spirit most during emotionally intense times, whether that’s sadness, gratitude, loneliness or reflection. Emotion opens the door. Your heart, not your technique, is the gateway to Spirit.
As a former trauma counsellor, I understand how emotional states shape human behaviour and awareness. Those same emotional states shape spiritual connection. The more authentic your emotional expression, the clearer the spiritual blending becomes.
Communicating With Spirit Begins With Stillness, Not Effort
Many people try too hard when attempting to feel Spirit. They push, they focus intensely, they wait for signs or try to force an experience. The problem is that effort creates tension, and tension makes Spirit harder to sense.
Spirit communication happens most naturally when you’re not overthinking. It happens in moments where the mind is calm and the emotional noise has softened.
You don’t need to sit in silence for hours. You simply need a moment where you’re present, grounded and not mentally rushing. It can be during a walk, a quiet drive, a morning coffee or those few minutes before sleep. These are the moments where Spirit can reach you most clearly because you’re not blocking the experience with expectation.
Talking to Spirit Is More Effective When You Speak Honestly
People often talk to Spirit politely, cautiously or indirectly, as if they need to phrase things a certain way. In truth, Spirit wants authenticity, not rehearsed lines.
Speak to them the way you would have spoken to them in life.
If you miss them, say it.
If you’re angry they’ve gone, express it.
If you need support, tell them.
If you’re grateful, let that emotion rise.
Spirit receives communication through emotional intention, not the exact words. You cannot say the wrong thing. You cannot offend Spirit. What matters is that your communication comes from a genuine emotional place.
Strengthening Your Awareness Makes Spirit Easier to Sense
Spirit communication is subtle. It’s rarely loud or dramatic. It appears through emotion, atmosphere, sensation, memory and intuition. To communicate more effectively, you need to become more aware of these softer signals rather than waiting for something bold and undeniable.
You might feel suddenly warm.
You might think of them out of nowhere.
You might sense someone standing near you.
You might hear their name on the radio unexpectedly.
You might feel a shift in the atmosphere around you.
These experiences may not seem big, but they are meaningful. Spirit blends quietly, not forcefully. The more you learn to trust your subtle awareness, the stronger the communication becomes.
Emotional Openness Is the Key to Stronger Spiritual Connection
This is where my psychotherapy background comes in. Many people unintentionally block Spirit because they suppress emotion. They fear crying, avoid memories or distract themselves from the pain of loss.
But Spirit communicates through emotion. If you numb yourself, you unknowingly numb your ability to feel Spirit too.
Being emotionally open does not mean falling apart. It means allowing yourself to feel without judging the emotion. When you remember, reflect or allow grief to surface, you open the emotional channel Spirit uses to reach you.
This is why mediumship is much stronger during readings or shows when the audience is emotionally engaged. Spirit steps in when the energy is authentic.
Signs Become Clearer When You Stop Watching for Them
One of the biggest obstacles people face when trying to communicate with Spirit is expectation. They watch for signs constantly, and in doing so, they miss the ones that actually appear.
Spirit often gives signs when your mind is relaxed — when you’re not looking, not forcing, not analysing. This is why signs appear during ordinary tasks. You’re finally in a neutral state where Spirit can blend with your awareness without resistance.
To communicate more effectively, release the pressure to “see proof.” Allow signs to come naturally. They always do.
Trusting Your Own Experiences Makes Communication Stronger
Spirit communication weakens when you doubt yourself constantly. People often dismiss their own experiences because they expect something bigger or more dramatic. But trust is essential. If something made you stop, feel, remember or emotionally react — it meant something. Spirit rarely wastes energy.
The more you trust the subtle experiences, the more frequent and clear they become.
Conclusion: Effective Communication With Spirit Is About Feeling, Not Forcing
Spirit communication isn’t about rituals or rules. It’s about emotion, authenticity, presence and softening the mind enough to feel what is already there. Your loved ones hear you every time you speak to them — whether out loud or internally. They blend with your emotional truth, not your perfect moments.
When you communicate honestly, when you allow yourself to feel, and when you stop pushing for proof, Spirit steps closer naturally.
They want to hear you.
They want to support you.
And they want your life to move forward with strength, healing and meaning.
