Introduction: The Paradox of Pain and Spiritual Presence

One of the things people often say to me is, “I felt them the most when I was at my lowest.” It surprises them because they assume grief, stress or emotional overwhelm should block Spirit out entirely. Yet the opposite is often true. Spirit can feel closer, clearer and more evident during emotionally difficult times. As both a psychic medium and a former psychotherapist specialising in trauma, I’ve seen this consistent pattern in hundreds of people.

When you are brought to your emotional knees — through grief, heartbreak, crisis, fear or loss — something shifts energetically and spiritually. Doors open, walls soften and the connection between this world and Spirit becomes easier to sense. Not because Spirit comes closer, but because you unconsciously allow yourself to feel in a way you normally don’t.

Emotion Creates an Energetic Bridge

Spirit blends through emotion, not logic. When you are emotionally overwhelmed, your focus moves inward, toward your heart rather than your thoughts. You become more sensitive, more vulnerable and more open — even if you don’t realise it.

In everyday life, people stay busy, analytical and distracted. Emotionally difficult times remove those distractions. Pain forces stillness. It strips away noise. And that stillness creates the emotional space Spirit can blend with.

Spirit does not rely on ceremony or technique. They rely on emotional resonance. When you feel deeply, it becomes easier for them to connect with your awareness.

Your Guard Drops During Difficult Times

People live with emotional armour. They hold themselves together, keep moving, suppress feelings and distract themselves with routine. This armour keeps life manageable, but it also makes Spirit harder to sense.

During crisis or heartbreak, that armour cracks. Not by choice — by emotional necessity. When the guard drops, your intuitive senses naturally heighten. You feel more. You notice subtle energy more. You become aware of things that normally sit beneath the surface.

Spirit does not need you to be perfect or composed; they need you to be open. Emotional difficulty creates that opening.

Pain Slows the Mind and Sharpens the Senses

In everyday life, the mind is loud — racing, planning, analysing, worrying. Spirit communication is subtle, quiet and gentle. It can be drowned out easily by mental noise.

During emotionally heavy periods, your mind often slows because your emotions take centre stage. The usual chatter weakens. The constant internal dialogue pauses.
In that space — that break in mental noise — Spirit can be felt more naturally. People suddenly notice tingles, chills, emotional waves, memories, dreams or an intuitive sense of someone nearby.

It’s not that Spirit wasn’t there before. You simply didn’t have the emotional stillness to notice.

Grief Creates a Strong Spiritual Signal

Grief is one of the most powerful emotional energies a human being can experience. It pulls the heart open in a way no other emotion does. It focuses your entire being on the person you’ve lost.

Spirit responds to that energy.
Not because they are summoned — Spirit is not commanded by emotion — but because grief creates emotional clarity. You think of them constantly, remember them intensely and connect to them deeply.

That emotional focus becomes a spiritual channel. Spirit blends with memory, love and longing, which is why many people sense their loved ones more strongly during grief than at any other time.

Spirit Comes Close to Comfort and Support

Emotionally difficult times are often when Spirit wants to bring the most comfort. They understand human suffering. They see the pain you carry. They also see the moments when you are vulnerable, frightened or overwhelmed.

Spirit does not step back during these moments — they step forward. They want to support, soothe and reassure you. They want to let you know you are not facing life alone. Their presence is often felt through sudden warmth, emotional shifts, unexpected memories, dream visitations, flickers of intuition or a sense of invisible companionship.

People interpret this as Spirit “coming closer,” but in truth, Spirit is always close. You simply feel them more when your emotions soften the veil.

Trauma Heightens Intuitive Awareness

As someone who worked for many years as a trauma counsellor, I know that trauma forces people into a heightened state of awareness. The senses sharpen. The body becomes alert. Emotions intensify.

This heightened emotional state naturally increases intuitive awareness. It is not spiritual in itself — it is psychological. But Spirit can blend more easily with heightened emotional awareness than with numbed or distracted emotion.

This is why people often report seeing signs, experiencing dreams or sensing their loved ones most strongly during periods of trauma or emotional upheaval.

Spirit Uses Difficult Moments to Guide, Not Frighten

Spirit never causes emotional difficulty, nor do they use it as an opportunity to overwhelm. But they do use these moments to bring guidance because your defences are lower and your awareness is higher.

You may suddenly receive inner clarity.
You may feel pushed toward a decision.
You may sense reassurance or calm.
You may receive a dream that gives closure or direction.

This guidance often arrives when you are “broken open” emotionally — when the heart is fragile, but also receptive.

Difficult Times Make You Seek Meaning More Deeply

Spiritual awareness increases when people begin asking deeper questions:

Why did this happen?
Are they still around me?
Am I alone in this?
Is there still connection beyond physical life?

This search for meaning creates emotional and spiritual openness. When people seek connection, they often find it. Not because Spirit changes their behaviour, but because the person shifts into a state where they are more aware of what is already there.

Conclusion: Spirit Feels Closer Because You Are More Open, Not Because They Move

Spirit does not come and go depending on your emotional state. They are consistent, present and connected. But emotionally difficult times open the heart in ways normal life does not.

Your guard drops.
Your mind quietens.
Your intuition heightens.
Your memories intensify.
Your longing sharpens your awareness.

These emotional shifts create the perfect conditions for Spirit to be felt more strongly.
They don’t step closer — you step into a place where noticing them becomes easier.
