Do Dogs Sense Spirits or Ghosts? | Beyond Mediumship

Introduction: All a Coincidence?

The question of whether dogs can sense spirits or ghosts is one that comes up repeatedly in mediumship, especially from people who have witnessed their dog reacting to something they themselves cannot see. A dog wagging its tail at empty space, following something with its eyes, reacting to a corner of a room, or appearing to greet someone who is no longer physically present can leave a lasting impression. These moments often feel personal, emotional, and difficult to dismiss. Or is it all a coincidence?

From my perspective as a working psychic medium, this is not a question that deserves a simple yes or no answer. As with most things connected to awareness, perception, and consciousness, there are two sides to this discussion. Dogs are not human, and they experience the world very differently to us. That difference alone explains much of what people witness. At the same time, animals are not conditioned in the same way humans are, and that distinction matters when discussing spiritual awareness.

How Dogs Experience the World Differently

Dogs do not experience reality through intellect, belief systems, or social conditioning. They live almost entirely through sensory awareness. Their hearing, smell, and sensitivity to environmental change far exceed our own. They pick up subtle shifts in sound, movement, vibration, and atmosphere long before a human would consciously register anything.

From a grounded point of view, this explains a great deal of behaviour that people sometimes label as spiritual. A dog reacting to a sound we cannot hear, a scent we cannot detect, or a change in air pressure is doing what dogs naturally do. They respond instinctively rather than analytically.

This does not mean that dogs are seeing ghosts. It does mean that they are aware of far more than we are.

Sensitivity Does Not Mean Seeing

One of the biggest misunderstandings around this topic is the idea that sensing spirit must involve seeing a figure or shape. Mediumship does not even work like that for humans, let alone animals. Awareness is not primarily visual. It is perceptual.

Dogs respond to shifts in awareness rather than images. They may react to a familiar emotional signature, a subtle change in atmosphere, or something that feels recognisable rather than visible. Humans often interpret this as “seeing a spirit” because that is the closest language available to explain the experience.

In reality, it is more accurate to say dogs sense rather than see.

Conditioning and the Difference Between Humans and Animals

One important distinction between humans and animals is conditioning. Humans are gradually taught what is acceptable to believe and what should be dismissed. Children, for example, often speak openly about seeing or sensing things adults cannot. Over time, many are told it is imagination, fantasy, or nonsense. Eventually, awareness narrows and attention shifts outward.

Dogs are not conditioned in this way. They are not told that something is impossible or should be ignored. They respond to what they perceive without filtering it through belief or disbelief. This does not automatically mean they are interacting with spirit, but it does mean they are less restricted in how they respond to subtle awareness.

In that sense, dogs may be closer to how children experience the world before conditioning takes hold.

When Behaviour Feels Familiar Rather Than Random

What often stands out for people is not unusual behaviour itself, but how familiar it feels. A dog wagging its tail gently, following something with its eyes, or reacting in a calm and recognisable way can feel very different from fear-based or reactive behaviour.

This is where people begin to associate the experience with a loved one rather than a random stimulus. Familiarity matters. Dogs respond differently to something that feels known than to something unfamiliar.

From a mediumship perspective, this familiarity is key. Spirit communication, when perceived, is usually recognised through feeling rather than sight.

A Personal Example Involving My Wife and Her Dog

An example that illustrates this well comes from my wife, Michele, and her dog, Levi. On several occasions, Michele observed Levi wagging his tail and following something or someone with his eyes, yet there was clearly no one physically there. His behaviour was calm, gentle, and familiar rather than alert or anxious.

The natural thought process led to the idea that he may have been responding to the awareness of her departed father. That does not mean this was proof, and it was never treated as such. It was simply an observation that felt personal rather than coincidental.

Importantly, the experience did not feel frightening or dramatic. It felt subtle and emotionally recognisable, which is often how genuine awareness presents itself.

When the Experience Is Reversed

Another profoundly emotional example came after Levi himself had passed. On more than one occasion, Michele heard the sound of the ID discs on his collar, even though he was no longer physically present. This sound was distinctive and unmistakable. There was no logical explanation for it in those moments.

These experiences were not sought, encouraged, or imagined. They occurred naturally and unexpectedly, which is often why they leave such a strong emotional impact. When something familiar presents itself without explanation, it bypasses analysis and goes straight to feeling.

This does not need to be labelled as proof. Its significance lies in the personal experience rather than external validation.

The Psychological and Emotional Layer

It is also important to acknowledge the emotional and psychological layer involved in these experiences. Grief heightens awareness. After loss, people are more sensitive to memory, sound, and association. This does not invalidate experiences, but it does add context.

Hearing a familiar sound or seeing familiar behaviour can be a powerful emotional trigger. Whether that experience is spiritual, psychological, or a combination of both, its impact is real.

Mediumship does not dismiss emotional processing. It exists alongside it.

Why Not Everything Needs a Spiritual Explanation

As a psychic medium, I believe strongly in balance. Not every reaction from a dog is spiritual. Dogs react to things constantly that humans never notice. Wildlife, distant noise, environmental changes, and routine disruption all play a role.

Interpreting every behaviour as spirit-related can create unnecessary fear or over-interpretation. Mediumship should never encourage hypervigilance or anxiety. Awareness is quiet, not intrusive.

Sometimes a dog is simply being a dog.

Why These Experiences Matter Anyway

Even when there is no clear explanation, these experiences matter because of how they make people feel. They can bring comfort, reassurance, and a sense of continuity. They remind people of connection rather than loss.

From my perspective, genuine spiritual awareness does not need to announce itself. It does not need validation or belief. It is recognised through familiarity, timing, and emotional resonance.

Conclusion: There is Not Just One Explanation

So, do dogs sense spirits or ghosts? The most honest answer is that dogs are highly sensitive beings who experience the world without the conditioning humans develop. They respond to subtle shifts in awareness, environment, and emotion that we often overlook or dismiss.

This does not mean dogs are seeing ghosts walking through the house. It does mean they may be aware of changes that humans associate with spirit presence. Their reactions can sometimes feel personal, familiar, and emotionally meaningful, particularly in the context of loss.

Examples like Michele’s experiences with Levi, both during his life and after his passing, illustrate how powerful and emotional these moments can be, even without definitive explanation. They do not need to be proven to be valid.

From a mediumship perspective, dogs are not indicators or proof. They are sensitive companions responding honestly to the world around them. When we approach these experiences with balance rather than assumption, we allow space for both psychological understanding and spiritual possibility.

Sometimes what dogs sense is spirit. Sometimes it is environment. And sometimes, it is simply the emotional imprint of love that never fully leaves.
