The Different Types of Mediumship: A Psychic Medium’s Perspective on How Spirit Communicates
The different types of mediumship: A psychic medium’s perspective on how spirit communicates by Psychic Medium Kristian von Sponneck

Mediumship is not a single ability but a spectrum of communication methods used to connect with the Spirit world. Over the years, I’ve learned that no two mediums work in exactly the same way, and no two connections unfold identically. Mediumship adapts to the medium, the Spirit communicator, and the moment itself. Understanding the different types of mediumship helps people appreciate the depth and complexity of Spirit communication, while also highlighting why some mediums specialise in certain forms more than others. From mental mediumship to trance and physical mediumship, each type offers its own unique experience, purpose and level of awareness.
Mental Mediumship: The Most Common Form of Spirit Communication
Mental mediumship is the type most people are familiar with, and it is the form I use most frequently in my work. It involves receiving communication from Spirit through the mind rather than through external physical phenomena. The Spirit communicator blends with the medium’s awareness, using intuitive channels such as clairvoyance, clairsentience, clairaudience and claircognizance to convey information.
Mental mediumship allows the medium to remain fully conscious and aware while interpreting the impressions they receive. The communication arrives through images, thoughts, emotions and sensations. This form of mediumship is deeply personal because it requires the medium to translate subtle impressions into meaningful messages. Every reading is different because Spirit communicates based on what the medium can interpret and what the sitter needs. Mental mediumship is the foundation of modern mediumship and is the form most commonly demonstrated in public shows, private readings and spiritual services.
Trance Mediumship: Allowing Spirit to Influence the Mind and Energy
Trance mediumship is a deeper and more immersive form of communication. In trance mediumship, the medium enters an altered state of consciousness, allowing Spirit to blend more closely with their mind and energy. Trance does not mean the medium is unconscious or unaware. Instead, the awareness shifts, and the presence of Spirit becomes stronger and more influential.
The depth of trance varies. In light trance, the medium remains aware of the room while Spirit subtly influences their thoughts, voice or energy. In deeper trance states, the medium becomes partially detached from the experience as Spirit uses the mind and body to communicate more directly.
Trance mediumship has a long history, especially in Spiritualism, and was used by some of the most respected mediums of the past. It requires trust, discipline and emotional stability, as the medium must surrender control while remaining energetically safe. This form of mediumship can offer profound teachings, philosophical insight and emotional healing, but it is not as commonly practised today due to the level of dedication and training it requires.
Physical Mediumship: When Spirit Manifests in the Physical World
Physical mediumship is one of the rarest and most dramatic forms of mediumship. It involves Spirit producing physical phenomena that can be witnessed by everyone present, not just the medium. Unlike mental mediumship, where communication is internal, physical mediumship brings Spirit into the physical environment.
Examples include audible voices, direct voice phenomena, movement of objects, the formation of ectoplasm or even partial materialisations. Historically, physical mediumship was more common, especially in the Victorian era, where séances were popular and experimentation was widespread. However, physical mediumship requires a unique type of medium, specific environmental conditions and a supportive group that works consistently over long periods.
From my own standpoint, physical mediumship is incredibly rare in the modern world. The conditions required are difficult to achieve, and genuine physical mediums are few. Although it is fascinating, it is a field that is often misunderstood and, at times, exploited, making genuine physical mediumship even harder to identify. Real physical mediumship is not performance; it is a powerful interaction between Spirit, energy and the physical environment, and it happens only in the right conditions.
Healing Mediumship: Channelling Spiritual Energy for Wellbeing
Healing mediumship involves channelling healing energy from Spirit to support emotional, physical or spiritual wellbeing. This does not replace medical treatment, but it can complement it by offering comfort, calm and energetic balance. The medium becomes a conduit through which healing energy flows, allowing Spirit to influence the recipient’s energy field.
Some mediums work with hands-on healing, while others channel healing energy remotely. Healing mediumship requires sensitivity, compassion and a strong connection to Spirit. From my perspective, healing energy is one of the gentlest and most meaningful forms of mediumship because it brings peace rather than information. Many people feel warmth, tingling or emotional release during healing, even though no words are exchanged.
Inspirational Mediumship: Spirit-Led Speaking and Creativity
Inspirational mediumship occurs when Spirit influences speech, writing or creative expression. This type of mediumship often appears in public demonstrations where mediums speak fluidly on spiritual topics without prior planning. Spirit does not take over the medium but inspires their thoughts, words and direction.
I often find that during shows or demonstrations, Spirit can step in and influence the flow of communication, guiding the message in a way that resonates strongly with the audience. Inspirational mediumship can be powerful because it allows Spirit to communicate broader teachings and emotional truths rather than personal evidence alone. It often unfolds naturally in mediums who are open, expressive and comfortable allowing Spirit to guide their awareness.
Development and Specialisation in Mediumship
Different mediums naturally gravitate toward different types of mediumship. Some feel more aligned with mental mediumship, while others have a strong ability for trance or healing. Rarely does one person excel equally in all forms, and that is perfectly normal. From my perspective, it is important for mediums to recognise where their strengths lie rather than trying to force a type of mediumship that does not come naturally. Mediumship unfolds uniquely for each individual, and the best results come from developing the form that aligns most closely with your natural abilities and intuition.
Conclusion: Mediumship Is a Spectrum, Not a Single Skill
The different types of mediumship show just how varied Spirit communication can be. Whether through mental messages, trance states, physical phenomena or healing energy, mediumship is a diverse and deeply personal practice. As a psychic medium, I have seen how each form serves a different purpose, offering comfort, evidence, guidance or healing depending on what the sitter needs and how Spirit chooses to communicate.
Mediumship is not about performance or perfection. It is about connection, awareness and trust. When you understand the different types of mediumship, you begin to appreciate the depth of Spirit communication and the many ways it can transform lives.
