Near Death Experiences: a Mediums Perspective
Near Death Experiences: a Mediums Perspective by Psychic Medium Kristian von Sponneck

Introduction: Belief in Life After Death
Near death experiences are often spoken about in hushed tones or with dramatic certainty. People describe tunnels of light, feelings of peace, encounters with beings, or watching their body from above. For some, these experiences confirm belief in life after death. For others, they are dismissed entirely as neurological events. As a working psychic medium, I sit somewhere very deliberately between those two extremes.
Near death experiences matter, not because they prove anything, but because they reveal something important about consciousness. They offer insight into how awareness behaves when the body is compromised, suspended, or close to death. From a mediumship perspective, they are not identical to spirit communication, but they do overlap in meaningful and revealing ways.
What Near Death Experiences Usually Involve
Although every near death experience is personal, there are common themes that appear repeatedly. People often describe a sense of separation from the body, heightened awareness, lack of pain, and a feeling of calm or clarity. Some report observing medical staff working on them. Others describe moving through darkness toward light or encountering a presence that feels intelligent, familiar, or guiding.
What stands out is not the imagery itself, but the consistency of awareness. Even when the body is unconscious or clinically compromised, perception appears to continue. From a mediumship standpoint, this is significant.
Consciousness Beyond the Body
Mediumship is fundamentally about consciousness existing independently of the physical body. Near death experiences echo this idea without needing spiritual language to explain it. People report awareness without physical sensation, memory without brain activity, and emotion without bodily response.
This challenges the idea that consciousness is entirely generated by the brain. It does not prove that spirit survives death, but it does strongly suggest that awareness is not as limited to physical function as we once believed.
As a medium, this aligns with how spirit communication feels. Awareness exists without form. Identity remains without physical presence.
Why Near Death Experiences Are Not Proof
It is important to be clear about this. Near death experiences are not proof of the afterlife. Anyone claiming otherwise is oversimplifying a complex phenomenon. Experiences occur close to death, not beyond it. The person returns. That distinction matters.
From my perspective, near death experiences are not demonstrations. They are glimpses. They offer insight rather than confirmation. They show us what consciousness may be capable of under extreme conditions, but they do not define what happens after death itself.
Mediumship does not rely on near death experiences to validate itself, and it should not.
The Role of the Brain and the Role of Awareness
Sceptics often point to chemical reactions in the brain, oxygen deprivation, or neurological response as explanations for near death experiences. These explanations should not be dismissed. The brain plays a role in how experiences are interpreted and remembered.
However, explaining how an experience is processed does not explain why awareness remains coherent when the body is failing. From a mediumship perspective, the brain may act as a receiver or translator rather than the sole generator of consciousness.
This idea mirrors how mediums experience information. The brain interprets, but awareness precedes interpretation.
Why Some Experiences Feel Spiritual and Others Do Not
Not all near death experiences are peaceful or comforting. Some are confusing, fragmented, or emotionally neutral. This is often overlooked in popular discussion.
From my perspective, this variation supports the idea that near death experiences are not scripted or universal. They are shaped by perception, expectation, and individual awareness. The experience is filtered through the individual, not imposed by an external rule.
Mediumship works in a similar way. Spirit communication is interpreted through the medium’s perception, language, and emotional awareness. There is no single template.
The Difference Between Near Death Experiences and Spirit Contact
A common mistake is to equate near death experiences with crossing into the spirit world. They are not the same thing. Near death experiences occur while the individual is still connected to the body, however temporarily.
In mediumship, communication is perceived from awareness that is no longer tied to physical survival. The quality of awareness feels different. It is less transitional and more stable.
That does not diminish the value of near death experiences. It simply places them in their proper context.
Why Near Death Experiences Often Change People
One of the most striking aspects of near death experiences is how profoundly they affect people afterward. Many report reduced fear of death, increased compassion, and a shift in priorities.
From a mediumship perspective, this makes sense. When someone experiences awareness beyond physical limitation, it reframes how they view life itself. Death becomes less abstract and more integrated.
This is similar to what many people experience after meaningful mediumship encounters. Perspective changes, not belief alone.
Cultural Influence and Expectation
It is also important to acknowledge cultural influence. The imagery people report often reflects personal or cultural frameworks. This does not invalidate the experience, but it does shape how it is expressed.
Mediumship encounters are also influenced by personal symbolism. Spirit communication rarely arrives as literal imagery. It arrives as meaning that is then translated.
Understanding this prevents near death experiences from being over-interpreted or sensationalised.
Why Near Death Experiences Do Not Replace Mediumship
Near death experiences are often held up as stronger evidence than mediumship. I disagree with that comparison entirely. They are different phenomena serving different purposes.
Mediumship involves communication between states of awareness. Near death experiences involve transition within the same awareness. One does not validate the other, and neither needs to.
Both point toward consciousness being more complex than physical explanation alone, and that is where their value lies.
What Near Death Experiences Teach Us
Near death experiences remind us that awareness is resilient. They show that identity, memory, and perception can exist independently of physical function, at least temporarily.
From a medium’s perspective, this supports the idea that consciousness does not end abruptly when the body fails. It transitions. How that transition unfolds remains deeply personal and not fully understood.
Conclusion
Near death experiences do not prove the afterlife, and they do not need to. Their significance lies in what they reveal about consciousness, awareness, and perception. They show us that awareness can exist beyond physical limitation, even if only briefly.
From my perspective as a psychic medium, near death experiences align with many aspects of spirit communication, but they are not the same thing. They offer insight, not certainty. They expand understanding rather than close debate.
When we approach near death experiences with balance rather than belief or dismissal, we allow them to inform rather than define our understanding of life, death, and consciousness. And in that space between certainty and mystery, genuine understanding has room to grow.
